Softball Tigers finish off win

It took a little longer than expected, but the end result was exactly what the Edwardsville High softball team was looking for. The Tigers finished off the Granite City Warriors in the semifinals of the Class 4A Edwardsville Regional Wednesday, 7-0, a day after the game originally started but was suspended due to rain. Maroons top EHS in league finale

Perhaps it was post-celebration syndrome. One day after clinching the Southwestern Conference outright, the Edwardsville Tiger baseball team lost its final league game of the season, falling 10-8 to the Belleville West Maroons in Belleville. The Maroons, 21-6 overall and 10-3 in the SWC, roughed up EHS starting lefthander Chase Carroll in a nine-run second inning to jump out to a big lead. [full story]

Baseball Tigers clinch SWC title

BELLEVILLE — The Edwardsville Tigers accomplished something Monday at Lancer Field in Belleville that had eluded them since 2004 — winning the Southwestern Conference outright. The Tigers (29-2, 12-1) achieved the feat with an 8-1 triumph over the Belleville East Lancers (12-12, 4-7). They shared the SWC title in 2006 with Belleville West and O’Fallon, but it was definitely rewarding for them to finally stand atop the heap alone again after doing so from ‘01 through ‘04. O’FALLON — Edwardsville Tiger girls’ track coach Steve Chapman had to make a tough decision last week, holding out Madi Pranger, one of his top athletes, from the Southwestern Conference Meet because of a hamstring injury. The move, however, paid off in the long run as Pranger joined teammates Shanice Rice and Laila Jason, each qualifying for next weekend’s state tournament in three events at the Class 3A O’Fallon Sectional Friday night. The Tigers breezed past East Peoria 11-1 in five innings and followed it up with a six inning, 11-1 win over Harrisburg. The Edwardsville Tigers secured their ninth consecutive Southwestern Conference tennis tournament Saturday in Edwardsville, but it wasn’t easy. The Tigers squeaked past the Belleville West Maroons by two points to finish atop the eight-team SWC heap. EHS had 66 points while the Maroons totaled 64. The rest of the field was Belleville East third (53), Alton fourth (48), O’Fallon fifth (38), Collinsville sixth (26), Granite City seventh (18) and East St. Louis eighth (14). [full story]

The Edwardsville Tigers just keep rolling. EHS took just five innings to unleash its dominance on Southwestern Conference rival Alton Tuesday at Alton High School, thrashing the Birds 13-0. Big Ten announces awards

On Tuesday, the Big Ten named its award winners for the 2008-09 men’s golf season.

Freshman Chris Brant was the only honoree from Iowa despite the team’s first NCAA regional berth since 1995. The Edwardsville, Ill., native, carded a 72-hole score of 294 (10 over) at the 2009 Big Ten championships on May, leading the Hawkeyes to a sixth-place finish — their best in eight years. Pitching has been the bread and butter of the Edwardsville Tiger softball team. Now the offense is starting to find its niche, and that spells trouble for opposing teams. On Tuesday, the Tigers hammered out 13 hits in a 7-0 romp of the Collinsville Kahoks in Collinsville. “We put the ball in play,” said EHS coach Lori Blade, whose team improved to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in the Southwestern Conference with its fifth win in a row. “We didn’t get bunts down as well as I would have liked to see, especially in the early innings. Rachel Coonrod’s hot bat and Erin Greenwalt’s right arm led the Edwardsville Tiger softball team to a 5-0 victory over Triad Monday. Coonrod, the EHS/Zimmerman Insurance Player of the Week last week after hitting .625 with three home runs the week before, went 3 for 3 with a double and a home run against the Knights, raising her team-leading average to .533. Waldo inducted into Hall of Fame

Saturday night marked a prestigious moment for Edwardsville Tiger head basketball coach Mike Waldo — he became a Hall of Famer. Waldo, who has compiled a coaching record of 518-203 over his 26-year career on the hard court, was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. It includes a 437-152 record at EHS over the last 21 seasons and an 81-51 mark over five years at Alton Marquette.

According to Edwardsville Tiger tennis coach David Lipe, the reason to focus on doubles is simple math. “We want all of our players to be able to play doubles because two-thirds of the points at the sectional come from doubles,” said Lipe. “It is what it is. The Tigers skunked the East St. Louis Flyerettes 18-0 in the first quarter and never looked back on the road to a 57-28 victory. The Edwardsville Tiger girls’ basketball team wasted little time dispatching the Alton Redbirds Thursday at Lucco-Jackson Gym. But the persistent Tigers grinded it out and improved to 14-1 overall and 4-1 in the Southwestern Conference with a 56-43 win over the O’Fallon Panthers (6-8, 2-4). It was EHS’s first action of 2009. It took the Edwardsville Tigers (8-1) an extra four minutes to do it, but they sneeked past the Springfield Southeast Spartans 52-50 in overtime on Saturday at the 2008 Premier Girls Prep Classic at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.

The Edwardsville Tigers wrestling team stuck with it on Thursday at Belleville West and turned an early deficit into a 48-24 victory over the Maroons.

Trailing 15-6 after West’s Dustin Ventimiglia pinned the Tigers’ Mason McBride in the 145-pound weight class, EHS reeled off five straight pins of their own to build a commanding lead which carried them to victory. The Edwardsville Tiger wrestling team took a big cannonball right into the Southwestern Conference scene Thursday at Collinsville and splashed the Kahoks right out of Vergil Fletcher Gym. Tigers four-peat in Salem

While some of the faces have changed, the result remained the same for the Edwardsville Tiger girls basketball team at Saturday’s eighth annual Lady Wildcat Thanksgiving Tournament at Salem High School. EWC looks to the future — a new facility

The dreams of the Edwardsville Wrestling Club (EWC) finally became a reality on Nov. 7. On that date ground was broken for the new Edwardsville Wrestling Facility. The facility is located on Center Grove Road, at the entrance to the District 7 Sports Complex and is due to be completed in July 2009. It will be the home of the Edwardsville High wrestling team and its feeder program, the EWC.  [more...]

The Edwardsville Tiger boys’ cross country team ran not only with their legs, but with their heart on Saturday afternoon at Detweiller Park in Peoria in the Class 3A state meet. On a day when thousands of eyes from the Illinois cross country world were watching the Tigers run in the sleet and snow and physically demanding conditions, they were able to nab an impressive seventh-place finish with 308 points.  [more...]

The New Trier Trevians staved off a frantic late charge by the Tigers in the final three minutes of the Class 3A state championship game at North Central College in Naperville on Saturday, holding on for a 2-1 victory to hand Edwardsville its third second-place state finish in the past 11 years. Cameron Lauchner wasn’t quite old enough to cast a ballot on election day. But the Edwardsville High junior punched a ticket all the same — the Tiger soccer team’s ticket to the state tournament. Lauchner scored the golden goal for Edwardsville late Tuesday night at 2:41 of the second overtime of the Class 3A Normal Super-Sectional, lifting the Tigers past Tinley Park-Andrew 2-1 and into the state Final Four in Naperville this weekend.  [more...]

There was no lack of excitement and intensity on the floor between Moline and Edwardsville Tuesday night in Quincy. It took the Tigers three momentum-changing games to dismiss the talented Maroons 2-1 in the semifinals of the Class 4A Quincy Sectional. LADUE, Mo. — An offensive influx during the second half paced the Edwardsville Tigers field hockey squad in Thursday’s first round action in the Midwest Women’s Athletic Association playoffs at Horton Watkins High School in Ladue. EHS, 10-9, tallied one score in the first half and three more in the second to blast past the Oakville Tigers 4-1. The win sets up a rematch with the MICDS Rams at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lafayette High School. The Rams defeated Edwardsville 3-0 last Thursday at the Winston Brown Track and Field Complex.  [more...]

COLLINSVILLE — The Edwardsville Tiger volleyball team didn’t have as easy of a time with the Collinsville Kahoks on Saturday night at Vergil Fletcher Gym in Collinsville as they did the first time they played them. But the good news for the Tigers is they were able to get past the hard-charging Kahoks, 2-0, to advance to the Class 4A Quincy Sectional on Tuesday. NORMAL — When Edwardsville senior Tim Hankins finally broke a scoreless tie with less than five minutes to go at Saturday’s Class 3A Normal Sectional title game, he only had one thing on his mind. “I just thought about running back to our bench as fast as I could,” said Hankins, who had plenty of reason to celebrate as he scored twice in the final five minutes to hand the Tigers a 2-0 victory over Normal Community and send them to the Normal Super-Sectional on Tuesday.  [more...]

Monday night was Senior Night for the talented Edwardsville Tiger volleyball squad, but the results weren’t quite what they had hoped for. The Class 4A Tigers (22-7) welcomed Class 3A powerhouse Breese Mater Dei (26-4) to Lucco-Jackson Gymnasium and the two teams put on an entertaining display of volleyball with the Knights eventually beating Edwardsville 2-1. There’s been a reoccurring theme for the Edwardsville Tiger soccer team this posteason — Kevin Minor starting plays and Tim Hankins finishing them. The Alton Redbirds are in the midst of their best season in school history and playing well, but on Thursday at Lucco-Jackson Gymnasium the Redbirds got their first taste of the Edwardsville Tigers — and it wasn’t pretty. The Tigers breezed past Alton 2-0 to earn a share of the Southwestern Conference. EHS, now 22-6 and 6-0 in conference, could get the top prize in the SWC with a Tuesday victory over Belleville West. The Maroons are currently 5-1 in conference play. It’s the second consecutive season Edwardsville has been atop the SWC, winning it outright in ‘07.  [more...]

Lincoln eighth grade softball team finishes a 22-1 season

The Lincoln Wildcats’ eighth grade softball team capped off a 22-1 season with a third place finish in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class AA Softball Tournament. The team’s only loss came in the semi-final game of the tournament, which was held in Normal, Illinois, on September 26 and 27. The girls were recognized for their accomplishments at the October 14, 2008, Board of Education meeting at Woodland Elementary School.

The Liberty Lady Panthers continued their winning ways on Tuesday evening by defeating Country Club Hills Southwood, 40-35, in overtime.  This victory sends the Lady Panthers to Riverton High School in Riverton, Illinois.  A student fan bus is planned for Thursday, December 8.  Parental permission slips must be returned by Wednesday, December 7.  Limited seating on the bus may occur.  The cost for student admission is $2.00.
