The Edwardsville High volleyball team already had a share of the
Southwestern Conference title secured. But the Tigers didn’t want to share

had to play the waiting game. Now it’s time to wait. The East St. Louis
Flyers had their way with Edwardsville Friday night, cruising to a 51-0
victory to end the Tigers’ regular season at 5-4, eligible for the playoffs
but needing enough playoff points to get in.

Edwardsville High junior Caitlin Osborn may have been the lone Tiger
representative at the Class AA State Girls’ Golf Tournament this weekend.
But she wasn’t alone. “All the other girls on the team called Friday night
to give Caitlin support,” said EHS coach Tresa LaBoube. “That was pretty
special and I think it really helped Caitlin.”

Cat fight ends in a SWC split

It was the battle of the big cats Friday in the Southwestern Conference Meet at Gordon Moore Park in Alton.
The Edwardsville Tigers squeaked out a first-place finish on the boys’ side, narrowly beating O’Fallon. In the girls’ division, it was the Panthers nabbing the top spot while EHS
took second.

There’s been a reoccurring theme for the
Edwardsville Tiger soccer team this posteason —
Kevin Minor starting plays and Tim Hankins finishing
them. The Tiger senior duo hooked up again on
Saturday as Minor stole a ball at midfield and fed
it up to Hankins, who blasted a shot past Granite
City keeper Eric Fowler for the lone goal of the
game as Edwardsville advanced past the Warriors at
the Class 3A Alton Regional title game, 1-0 at
Gordon Moore Park in Alton.

Tiger linksters bring home hardware

In the 70-year history of the Illinois High
School Association boys’ state golf tournament, only
four teams had ever broken 600. This weekend at the
Class 3A tournament at The Den at Fox Creek in
Bloomington, there were three teams that eclipsed
that magical mark. And one of them was the
Edwardsville Tigers.

Tiger booters advance

Oftentimes, the first postseason victory is the
toughest to secure. That was the case for a half
Monday night at the Class 3A Alton Regional. But
then the Edwardsville Tigers’ talent took over. Tim
Hankins notched a pair of second half goals and Ken
Giaccobe added another as the Tigers cruised to a
3-0 victory over the host-school Alton Redbirds at
Gordon Moore Park in Alton.

The Alton Redbirds are in the midst of their best
season in school history and playing well, but on
Thursday at Lucco-Jackson Gymnasium the Redbirds got
their first taste of the Edwardsville Tigers — and
it wasn’t pretty. The Tigers breezed past Alton 2-0
to earn a share of the Southwestern Conference. EHS,
now 22-6 and 6-0 in conference, could get the top
prize in the SWC with a Tuesday victory over
Belleville West. The Maroons are currently 5-1 in
conference play. It’s the second consecutive season
Edwardsville has been atop the SWC, winning it
outright in ‘07.

Lincoln eighth grade softball team finishes a 22-1 season

The Lincoln Wildcats’ eighth grade softball team
capped off a 22-1 season with a third place finish
in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class
AA Softball Tournament. The team’s only loss came in
the semi-final game of the tournament, which was
held in Normal, Illinois, on September 26 and 27.
The girls were recognized for their accomplishments
at the October 14, 2008, Board of Education meeting
at Woodland Elementary School.

The victories continue to pile up for the
Edwardsville boys cross country team. By placing
first in the Centralia Invitational on Saturday, the
Tigers won their sixth meet of the season and their
second in a row.

Fitterer's quick start aids Edwardsville

Kayla Fitterer came out hitting the volleyball,
and it helped carry the Edwardsville Tigers to a
two-game sweep of Civic Memorial Monday evening.
Fitterer had kills on each of the first five
attempts, and finished with 12 for the match as
Edwardsville (21-6) beat Civic Memorial 25-14,
25-17.

junior, carded a 77 to advance to this weekend’s

Friday extended the second-half frustrations of the
Edwardsville Tigers. Bester, a senior, scored on a
43-yard touchdown run with 11:44 to play in the
fourth quarter to lift the Lancers to a
come-from-behind 29-28 victory in a Southwestern
Conference game.

now a reality. Getting off to a solid start and
avoiding any major mistakes all day, Osborn shot a

Maroons was the definition of a swing game. The
winning team would move within one win of cementing

Sam Fink could have had several goals Saturday
afternoon against the Belleville West Maroons. But
one was all that was needed as Fink scored 21
minutes into the game and the Edwardsville Tiger
soccer team made the 1-0 lead stick, clinching the
program’s sixth Southwestern Conference title in the
past nine years in what was essentially a league
championship game at the District 7 Sports Complex.
