The Edwardsville Tiger girls’ basketball team wasted little time dispatching
the Alton Redbirds Thursday at Lucco-Jackson Gym. The Tigers hit on 12 of 13
field goals in the first quarter to open a 25-5 lead, taking away all the drama
in a matchup of Southwestern Conference rivals in a 61-37 Edwardsville victory.
“They came out like a buzzsaw,” said Alton coach William Gordon. “You have to
give it to them. They’re the 10th-ranked team in the state and they played like
it. I give coach Blade credit, she had her girls ready from the tip and it
showed.”

One of the biggest concerns for Edwardsville Tiger girls’ basketball coach
Lori Blade in Saturday’s opener of the Highland Tournament was how her team
would respond to a rare morning game. Apparently, this Tiger squad has some
early risers. Edwardsville hit on 9 of 12 field goals in the first quarter to
open a 21-6 lead over the Carlyle Indians and never looked back, cruising to an
83-41 victory to advance to tonight’s championship quarterfinals.

The O’Fallon Panthers may have had nightmares blanketed with orange and black
figures pelting them with pucks after Sunday night’s game at the East Alton Ice
Arena. The 12-2 Edwardsville Tigers pounded the weary Panthers 12-0 in a
drubbing that was called with 7:33 remaining in the third quarter after EHS
buried its 12th goal. The win ended the regular season for the Tigers and the
No. 12 had another special meaning for them on Sunday.

Last-second shot lifts EHS

Ismiah Roundtree sprinted alone past midcourt with five seconds remaining in
the game as an outlet pass from teammate Richard Siebers floated perfectly into
his arms. He raced to the basket, the ball rolled off his fingertips, bounced

EHS shakes off the rust

When the Edwardsville Tigers uncorked its game on Thursday at Lucco-Jackson
Gym, there wasn’t any fizz, just flat play. But the persistent Tigers grinded it
out and improved to 14-1 overall and 4-1 in the Southwestern Conference with a
56-43 win over the O’Fallon Panthers (6-8, 2-4). It was EHS’s first action of
2009. The Tigers game on Tuesday hosting East St. Louis was canceled due to
inclement weather, so they hadn’t played since Dec. 30 when they beat Charleston
for the Charleston Holiday Tournament Championship.

Conference was in jeopardy against the O’Fallon Panthers Wednesday night. The
Panthers came into the match unbeaten in the conference after knocking off the

Tigers win OT thriller in Springfield

It took the Edwardsville Tigers (8-1) an extra four minutes to do it, but they sneeked past the Springfield Southeast Spartans 52-50 in overtime on Saturday at the 2008 Premier Girls Prep Classic at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.
It was the second annual Premier Girls Prep Classic and the Tigers improved to 2-0 in the showcase. Last season EHS defeated Montini Catholic 51-39.

Tigers pin down West

The Edwardsville Tigers wrestling team stuck with it on Thursday at Belleville West and turned an early deficit into a 48-24 victory over the Maroons.
Trailing 15-6 after West’s Dustin Ventimiglia pinned the Tigers’ Mason McBride in the 145-pound weight class, EHS reeled off five straight pins of their own to build a commanding lead which carried them to victory. The win keeps the Tigers undefeated on the season at 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southwestern Conference.

Before the season began, Edwardsville Tiger girls’ basketball coach Lori Blade predicted that Belleville West would be the team to beat in the Southwestern Conference.
On Thursday at Lucco-Jackson Gym, the Maroons proved Blade right.
Belleville West jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half and held off a fourth-quarter charge by the Tigers to win 43-32 and remain unbeaten on the season at 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the SWC.

EWC looks to the future — a new facility

The dreams of the Edwardsville Wrestling Club (EWC)
finally became a reality on Nov. 7. On that date
ground was broken for the new Edwardsville Wrestling
Facility. The facility is located on Center Grove
Road, at the entrance to the District 7 Sports
Complex and is due to be completed in July 2009. It
will be the home of the Edwardsville High wrestling
team and its feeder program, the EWC.

The Edwardsville Tiger boys’ cross country team
ran not only with their legs, but with their heart
on Saturday afternoon at Detweiller Park in Peoria
in the Class 3A state meet. On a day when thousands
of eyes from the Illinois cross country world were
watching the Tigers run in the sleet and snow and
physically demanding conditions, they were able to
nab an impressive seventh-place finish with 308
points.

Trevians staved off a frantic late charge by the

Cameron Lauchner wasn’t quite old enough to cast
a ballot on election day. But the Edwardsville High
junior punched a ticket all the same — the Tiger
soccer team’s ticket to the state tournament.
Lauchner scored the golden goal for Edwardsville
late Tuesday night at 2:41 of the second overtime of
the Class 3A Normal Super-Sectional, lifting the
Tigers past Tinley Park-Andrew 2-1 and into the
state Final Four in Naperville this weekend.

There was no lack of excitement and intensity on
the floor between Moline and Edwardsville Tuesday
night in Quincy. It took the Tigers three
momentum-changing games to dismiss the talented
Maroons 2-1 in the semifinals of the Class 4A Quincy

before dropping the second game 19-25 and nabbing a

hockey squad in Thursday’s first round action in the
Midwest Women’s Athletic Association playoffs at
Horton Watkins High School in Ladue. EHS, 10-9,

in the second to blast past the Oakville Tigers 4-1.
The win sets up a rematch with the MICDS Rams at 4

volleyball squad, but the results weren’t quite what they had hoped for. The

With a young and relatively inexperienced team this season, Edwardsville
Tiger girls’ tennis coach David Lipe wasn’t sure what to expect. What he got
was more of the same — a 12th straight sectional title and all four entries
advancing to the state tournament, which begins today in suburban Chicago.

representative at the Class AA State Girls’ Golf Tournament this weekend.
But she wasn’t alone. “All the other girls on the team called Friday night

Kevin Minor starting plays and Tim Hankins finishing
them. The Tiger senior duo hooked up again on
Saturday as Minor stole a ball at midfield and fed
it up to Hankins, who blasted a shot past Granite
City keeper Eric Fowler for the lone goal of the
game as Edwardsville advanced past the Warriors at

season in school history and playing well, but on
Thursday at Lucco-Jackson Gymnasium the Redbirds got
their first taste of the Edwardsville Tigers — and
it wasn’t pretty. The Tigers breezed past Alton 2-0
to earn a share of the Southwestern Conference. EHS,
now 22-6 and 6-0 in conference, could get the top
prize in the SWC with a Tuesday victory over
Belleville West. The Maroons are currently 5-1 in
conference play. It’s the second consecutive season
Edwardsville has been atop the SWC, winning it
outright in ‘07.

Lincoln eighth grade softball team finishes a 22-1 season

The Lincoln Wildcats’ eighth grade softball team
capped off a 22-1 season with a third place finish
in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class
AA Softball Tournament. The team’s only loss came in
the semi-final game of the tournament, which was
held in Normal, Illinois, on September 26 and 27.
The girls were recognized for their accomplishments
at the October 14, 2008, Board of Education meeting
at Woodland Elementary School.

Fitterer's quick start aids Edwardsville

Edwardsville junior Caitlin Osborn's quest for a
berth in the Class AA Girls State Golf Tournament is
now a reality. Getting off to a solid start and
avoiding any major mistakes all day, Osborn shot a
6-over 77 Monday to lead the way for metro-east area
players at the Mascoutah Sectional at the tough
Roland Barkau Memorial Golf Course.

Class 3A Alton Golf Regional. Baugher rolled
in a 7-foot par-saving putt on the first hole of a
sudden death playoff to claim medalist honors and
lead Edwardsville to the team title at Spencer T.

Friday night’s Southwestern Conference showdown
between the Edwardsville Tigers and Belleville West
Maroons was the definition of a swing game. The
winning team would move within one win of cementing
a spot in the playoffs. The loser, however,
would have to scramble, likely needing two wins in
its final three games to advance to the postseason.

Sam Fink could have had several goals Saturday
afternoon against the Belleville West Maroons. But
one was all that was needed as Fink scored 21
minutes into the game and the Edwardsville Tiger
soccer team made the 1-0 lead stick, clinching the
program’s sixth Southwestern Conference title in the
past nine years in what was essentially a league
championship game at the District 7 Sports Complex.

The Edwardsville Tiger boys’ golf team extended
its dual match winning streak to 60 on Monday,
topping Belleville Althoff and Mascoutah at Oak
Brook Golf Club. Edwardsville, which improved to
11-0 on the season, finished at 156, easily
outdistancing the Crusaders (164) and the Indians
(174).
