Pronoun: A word that is used as a substitution for a noun is called a pronoun. The prefix "pro" means for, so a pronoun means in place of the noun.

Examples: I, his, yours, she him, your, her, he that, hers, you these, its, we, me

Pronouns keep a writer from using the same nouns over and over again.

Repetition Example: Carl went into Carl’s garage to store Carl’s lawn mower for the winter.

Example of using pronouns: Carl went into his garage to store his lawn mower for the winter.
