A recent cumulative review indicated that our class required refresher lessons of the following concepts:

1. Area and perimeter of irregular shapes 2. angles of triangles 3 .area of triangles 4 . relationship of perimeter to area of rectangles.

Group 1 began working on the following challenge….

  1. Use the graph paper to draw this room. Include a scale. Write the perimeter, area, and volume. On a separate piece of paper explain how you did this and staple it to your drawing.

In this picture we are measuring the height of the room so we can find the volume. Length x width x height or area x height.

…while groups 2 and 3 worked on the following challenges…

2.Use the construction paper to draw and cut a triangle with each angle measuring 60 degrees. Then draw and cut a triangle with an area of 50 square centimeters.

First we made a square that had an area of a hundred. Then, we labeled the sides to 10cm on each side. Then, we cut the square out.. Next, we cut the square in half from corner to corner. We were left with two triangles with an area of 50cm.

…while group 4 worked on the following challenge…

  1. Use the construction paper to draw and cut a rectangle with an area of 100 square centimeters and a perimeter of 58 cm. Then cut 2 more rectangles with an area of 100cm. What are their perimeters? Include that information on the shapes you cut out.

When each group has finished, the activities and materials are sent to the next group.
