Cumulative Review

****Our class continually has cumulative reviews of all topics studied thus far. We do these reviews in the form of "Epic Challenges". Our class has studied: metric and customary measurement, elapsed time, some algebra (speed = distance/time), place value and decimals, estimation, and rounding. The students read the following story and answer questions about the story. In this way, the students have the opportunity to review and apply mathematical skills in a meaningful context.****

Epic Challenge

Emily is a pastry chef. She has to wake up very early to exercise and go to work. She goes to bed at 9:30 PM and wakes up at 5:00 AM. When she wakes up at 5:00, she runs 3 miles on a treadmill. It takes her about 45 minutes to run.

After she has gotten ready, she drives to work at the restaurant. She drives about 40 miles per hour on her way to work. The restaurant is about 20 miles from her home. On the way to work she bought 2 quarts of milk that she was going to need to make some desserts today. She also bought 1 2-liter bottle of soda. She needs to serve 15 people. Each person will be drinking soda out of 300 ml cups.

She needs to bake 2 cakes, 2 dozen muffins, and 3 dozen cookies. Each cake recipe requires 1 and 1/2 cups of milk. Each dozen muffins require 1/2 cup of milk. Each dozen cookies require 1/3 cup of milk.

During the day, Emily received 2 packages. One of them was a brand new fryer that measured 1 yard, 1 foot, and 3 inches in length. In order to fit it on her cooking table, she needed to move her microwave to the left. The other was big bread maker. It measured 1.10 meters in length.
