Planet Distance/Size
Scale
Our class drew the planets' sizes (1 meter = 100,000 miles) and distances (1 meter + 93,000,000 miles) to scale on the playground. The lesson had to be done over 2 different days because planet size and planet distance can't be drawn on the same scale. In addition, this lesson was taught in conjunction with our study of metric measurement.

This group is beginning to realize how far Pluto is Earth. |
Here Mrs. L. helps students draw Mercury. Its distance from the sun is .42 Astronomical Units or 42 centimeters for the scaled drawing. |
