2008 Graduation Ceremony

After careful consideration of all factors regarding the 2008 graduation ceremony, the administration has recommended and the Board of Education has approved that graduation exercises will be conducted in the Lucco-Jackson Gym on June 7, 2008, at 3:00 p.m.

On September 25, 2007, the District notified parents of graduating seniors that construction and renovation of the SIUE Vadalabene Center at the time of the 2008 graduation ceremony would prevent the District from holding graduation exercises there next spring.

The District surveyed parents of 566 seniors in regards to two options: an outdoor ceremony held on the football field at the Sports Complex or an indoor ceremony held in the Lucco-Jackson Gym. Two hundred eighty-eight (288) parents responded:

§  One hundred thirty-nine (139) prefer an indoor ceremony

§  One hundred forty-nine (149) prefer an outdoor ceremony

The uncertainty of the weather and the lack of an appropriate staging area for organizing students led to this recommendation. A last-minute change of locations would cause major logistical problems as well as problems for family members who planned to attend but couldn’t because of lack of space.

The ticket process for 2008 will mirror the one the high school has used for several years. All graduating seniors will be allotted five tickets (only one fewer than allotted for the Vadalabene Center). Tickets are requested by completing a reservation form that will be sent home with seniors. Parents are assured of five tickets, but they may request additional tickets if they become available. Past experience has shown that parents request only what they need, which frees up additional tickets for people who need more.

In addition, the District has made the following arrangements:

§  Live, remote broadcast of ceremony in the EHS Auditorium

§  Live broadcast of graduation on ECTV

§  Professional videotape of ceremony (purchase information will be available at a later date)

A reception for students, family, and friends will be held in Gym B after the ceremony.

An indoor graduation offers the District the best opportunity to conduct the kind of ceremony the community has come to expect. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Rest assured, this graduation will be a special moment for your entire family.

Respectfully,
