The goal of Edwardsville High School is to meet the educational needs of its students. These needs include college-bound instruction, specialization skills, personal enjoyment, vocational training, physical development, and citizenship preparedness. These needs reflect the personal aspect and uniqueness of each individual.

Edwardsville High School provides curricular and extracurricular activities to meet these needs. These needs should be provided for in a safe, orderly environment by a variety of offerings and activities, by striving for excellence, by an opportunity for achievement, and by a continuous improvement in equipment, materials, facilities, instruction, and leadership. Instructional staff and support staff strive to design and implement these activities.

Edwardsville High School is continually evaluated so that it prepares for the future through input from students, teachers, administrators, the Board of Education, parents, community leaders, employers, and consultants.

GOAL STATEMENTS

Students

  1. To instill and develop a rich work ethic in each student that will cause the student to see schoolwork as the top priority.

  2. To encourage each student to develop worthy social skills that exclude vulgar language, inappropriate demonstrations of affection, intimidation, and fights.

  3. To develop higher thinking skills and problem-solving skills to foster a greater development of the minds.

  4. To create an understanding of accountability for one’s actions.

  5. To inspire pride in and spirit at EHS.

  6. To continually strive to perform academically up to one’s greatest potential and ability.

Teachers

  1. To improve instruction through new or innovative ideas.

  2. To enhance a positive school-wide harmony between staff members in different departments and with the administration.

Parents and the Community

  1. To involve more parents in school service work.

  2. To involve more parents in the academic and social activities of their children.

  3. To improve public relations between our school and the community.

Grades are issued quarterly. Credits for passing grades are issued at the end of each semester. Quarter grades are to be regarded as grades in progress. They are not recorded on a student’s permanent record. Final average and rank are based on all semester grades earned from the 9th grade through the 12th grade. All courses are included in determining the grade point average and class rank except Physical Education and Media Aide. Courses at E.H.S. are taught in the traditional and weighted classifications: Grades received in all classes-except Physical Education and Media Aide-are given a numerical value according to the following (Grade point average and class rank and standing are affected by the grade as well as the course weight):

Traditional Weighted
A = 4 A = 5
B = 3 B = 4
C = 2 C = 3
D = 1 D = 2
F = 0 F = 0

Video Surveillance
All campus buildings and grounds, both interior and exterior, are owned by the school. Students have no reasonable expectation of privacy while on school property. All campus grounds, building classrooms, commons rooms, and hallways are subject to video surveillance, and the students are hereby notified of the school’s intent to use such video surveillance throughout these locations.

Automobile Searches
Student automobiles which are parked on school grounds shall be subject to search by school authorities if there is a reasonable suspicion that the student is using, selling, or in possession of drugs, alcohol, weapons, including “look-alike” drugs or weapons, or other contraband.

Interviewing Students by Police
Concerning police interviewing of students, the following guidelines should be followed:

  1. If a student initiates a request to talk to police, including an accident or incident report, such a request will be considered and handled in confidence.

  2. When police interview students who may be witness to an incident, the police do not need to notify parents/guardians; however, every effort will be made to notify the parent/guardian should a student become a suspect, which could result in an arrest

  3. It should be recognized by all that the police have the authority to remove a student from the school.

Weapons
The maintenance of a safe, pleasant, school environment which is conducive to learning is the highest priority of Edwardsville Senior High School. For this reason students who engage in such activities as vandalism, physical attack, theft, arson, or the carrying of a weapon are subject to extremely serious penalties. These penalties may include not only a multiple-day suspension of up to and including ten days but also expulsion.

The ban on carrying or the use of any type of weapon should be carefully noted by both students and parents. Weapons include firearms, ammunition, any type of knife (including pocketknives), or any other object which may be used as a weapon. Students should clearly understand that such things as a pocketknife may not be carried to school, even if there is no intent to use it in a harmful manner. Expulsion or suspension will be levied on any student who is found to be carrying a weapon to, from, or within the school or to, from, or at any school activity.

The Edwardsville Police School Resource Officer Program places an officer in the high school in an effort to create and maintain a safer learning environment. The SRO should be viewed as a resource person. The SRO acts as a law enforcement officer, a law-related counselor, and a law-related guide. As a law-related counselor, the officer provides legal guidance to students and acts as a link to support services both inside and outside the high school. As a law-related guide, the officer will share special law enforcement expertise in the classroom to promote a better understanding of our laws upon request.

Our SRO has been assigned room A-121 as an office on the campus. The officer welcomes visits from all students, parents, and staff members.

For additional information regarding the SRO Program throughout District #7, please visit the SRO web site at www.ecusd7.org/ehs/sro
