The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain.  Many historians today consider it as an unnecessary war.  Evidently, just prior to the formal declaration by the United States Senate, Britain was close to conceding the justness of our indignation, but slow travel prevented America of receiving the news in a timely fashion.  After a slow start, the United States was ultimately able to fight Britain to a draw.  Exhausted by years of war with Napoleon's France, Great Britain negotiated a treaty that was most favorable to American interests.

Probably the most famous incident of the war occurred during the late-summer of 1814, when Great Britain attempted to capture Baltimore.  The heroic defense mounted by the American garrison of Fort McHenry inspired a young lawyer by the name of Francis Scott Keyes to pen a paean to his nation that would eventually become the national anthem of the United States.
