2011-12 Math Department Goals, Initiatives, & Accomplishments -- Presentation to School Board 11Oct2011

Note: Bolded items are expansions from 2010-11

I. Goals
  • Academic Goals -
    • Complete and implement the Math Curriculum Review in order to address the needs and core skills of our students while maintaining and promoting high academic standards.
      • Common Core Algebra 1 course to be implemented for the first time during 2011-12.
      • Phasing out of Plus series continuing
    • Expand the opportunities available to students to encourage college-readiness especially in the areas of:
      • robotics - introduce new teacher to course
      • programming fundamentals- introduce new teachers to course
      • math & robotics team
      • after school tutoring Mon-Thur 2pm-3pm
  • Faculty Goals -
    • Encourage and enable continued collaborative but structured work among teachers via course leaders and curricular teams
      • Algebra 1 Common Core course development via curricular team of 4 teachers
        • Angie VanBuskirk (course leader), Susan Abendroth, & Chelsey Poettker
    • Promote professional teacher development. -
      • meet individually with each math teacher to discuss next year's course offerings,
      • teacher development opportunities (course development & leadership, stipend positions, etc)
        • Dan Morrissey - Robotics and Fundamentals of Programming
        • Paul Stuart - Fundamentals of Programming
        • Derayvia Grimes (new hire) - math team
    • Involve parents and the community in the mathematical development of their students.
      • encourage use of student notes with grades in TigerView
  • RTI Goal - Identify and implement consistent placement and intervention processes within the math curriculum that addresses the changing needs and skills of students.
    • part of on-going Common Core course design within the curriculum review process
II. Initiatives & Accomplishments

Curriculum - K-12 Math Curriculum Review Process

  • EHS Course Offerings --in coordination with district Curriculum Committee
    • new Algebra 1 Common Core course implemented
    • new Geometry Common Core course in design phase (on hold until ISBE makes decisions regarding assessment design)
    • old Algebra 1 Plus course discontinued
  • EHS Student Placement & Progression Process Identification
    • 8th grade Algebra 1 skills assessment given at end of 8th grade in 2011 and within first 2 weeks of freshman year at EHS
  • Common Core Standards adopted by ISBE --in coordination with district Curriculum Committee& math dept meetings (see below)
  • Middle-school Coordination -- in coordination with district Curriculum Committee
  • Familiarization with K-8 curriculum and EHS curriculum -- in coordination with district Curriculum Committee

PSAE Preparation :

  • Analysis of PSAE scores
    • lower over-all meets & exceeds (68%) from previous year primarily due to lower WorkKeys scores
    • improved ACT scores from previous previous year
  • In-Class Support :
    • WinKeys online software preparation
      • Upper-level (PreCalculus) classes- homework project with support by teachers after school
      • all other classes have a minimum of two 1-hour classroom sessions scheduled into the computer labs during March & April
    • Supplemental classroom PSAE preparation such as "Problem of the Day" and ACT Practice Sets
      • Geometry & Honors Geometry included extra Algebra/Arithmetic assessment & practice for all students
      • CAC Grant continued to be used in classroom "Polling System" and continued creation of corresponding PowerPoint slides for ACT preparation
    • End-of-Quarter Summary Exams
      • Plus Course Sequence designed to correspond to the PSAE exam format using multiple-choice questions.
      • AG Course Sequence designed to correspond to the PSAE exam format using multiple-choice questions.
    • After-school Support :
      • Two separate Saturday PSAE workshops (8am-noon, 2hours math, 2 hours English) provided as a service to students who chose to participate.
        • Workshops specifically focused on ACT Practice, ACT Strategies, WorkKeys practice (WinKeys online), and WorkKeys Strategies
      • After school PSAE tutoring opportunities on several days during the month prior to PSAE
  • AP Test Simulations during/after PSAE for seniors in AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science, and AP Statistics

Extra-Curricular Activities:

  • Math Team (led by head coach Mollie Easley, Susan Abendroth, and Derayvia Grimes)
  • Robotics Team (led by head coach Scott Hagin & Dan Morrissey)

Faculty Development

  • In-service days used as an internal workshop (based on faculty recommendations):
    • encourage use of "notes" available on TAC (teachers electronic gradebook) / TigerView to communicate more specific details of student success / difficulties.
  • Curriculum development committee members:
  • Identifying and matching Teacher Interests with Teacher development (long-term)
    • Part of individual teacher meetings with department chair.

      • common assessments & schedule for course including specifications on use of notes, time allowed, calculator usage, etc.
      • textbook counts totaled from your course teachers (Excel file will be on E: drive)
        • Number "Good" books
        • Number "Rebound" books
        • Number "Bad/Cannot be rebound" with an ISBE Loan stamp books
        • Number "Bad/Cannot be rebound" without an ISBE Loan stamp books
        • Number "Lost/Destroyed" books (each teacher should also turn in to bookkeeper)

Department Chair Goals:

  • Maintain department website (www.ecusd7.org/ehs/ehsstaff/mathDepartment)
    • Cost Control & Supply Requests
      • supply needs & requests
      • textbook counting & re-ordering with regards to re-usable (including rebinds) and non-reusable (including lost, damaged, or non-rebindable)
      • calculator counts (lost, damaged, end-of-lifetime, re-usable) and battery usage
  • Formalize departmental improvement using a Feedback Model
    • Academic Performance Recognition of Students (i.e. candy, certificate,awards, creation of Academic Letter for Letterman's Jacket, etc)
    • Math Dept Improvement Committee
      • encourage consistency for course teachers via course leader
      • consistent implementation of rules for all math teachers (i.e. parties/food in classroom, Ipods, etc)
  • Promote professional teacher development of math department by being a role-model:
    • Participate in Illinois State Math Standards process
    • K-12 Engagement with Achieve - represented Illinois as the K-12 math content specialist in Orlando to discuss the Assessment Framework for the Partnership for Readiness for College & Careers (PARCC)
    • Participation in SIUE Collaboration
      • NSF Grant opportunity with SIUE Department of Computer Science &Georgia Tech - Disciplinary Commons for H.S. Computing Educators
