Debate and Speech Club |

Debate kicks off the year by having one orientation meeting, and we then select willing and able students to participate in Teens Speak Out. TSO participants pick a controversial topic pertaining to today’s local youth and do intensive research to prepare a presentation for a panel of local business leaders and politicians at the end of October at Washington University in St. Louis. Following this event, Debate Club will then meet regularly to discuss current events or issues of student interest. |

The aim of this organization is to stimulate interest in the study of French, to create enthusiasm for and understanding of Francophone culture and civilization, to promote and perpetuate international friendship efforts toward furthering solidarity in the French speaking world. Students are selected for membership during second semester of they junior year according to their GPA and commitment to the propagation of the French language and its culture. |
German Club |

The German club offers opportunity to broaden the knowledge and culture and language through celebrations such as the Oktoberfest, sampling German cuisine at German restaurants and excursions to exhibits/concerts that reflect the German culture. |
German Honor Society |

Students who have completed five semesters of German and meet the grading standards in German and overall GPA may join the German Honor Society. Activities vary from year to year, but one of the responsibilities for German Honor Society members is to provide tutoring for lower level students. |
Literary Magazine |

The EHS Literary Magazine is a student organization that publishes a magazine of student literary work at least once a year. The literary magazine meets about twice a month to work on publication. They are also responsible for hosting the Poetry Readings at EHS. |

Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nation’s system. Students assume the roles of delegates to the United Nations and debate current issues on the U.N.’s agenda. Model U.N. students seeks ways the world community can deal with complex global concerns. |
National Honors Society (NHS) |

National Honor Society, founded in 1921, was created as an organization to recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. These ideals of scholarship, character, service, and leadership remain as relevant today as they were in 1921. Students plan and participate in service activities that benefit the community and school. |

The purpose of this group is to support students who want to enter projects in the regional Regional Science Fair at SIUE and/or Illinois Science and Humanities Symposium at SIUC. The group is open to any student interested in science research.

The Science Olympiad Team meets during the fall and early winter to prepare for the Regional Competition at SIU-Edwardsville. The team competes in events covering all of the areas of science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, and Technology

The Spanish Club is an organization designed to promote Hispanic cultural awareness and interest in the Spanish language. It has many events during the year. There is a dance group that learns Mexican folk dance and a “news team” that makes videos for special classroom events. |

Students who have completed five semesters of Spanish are invited to join this international honor society if they meet the standards concerning Spanish semester grades, overall GPA, and receive the recommendation of the Spanish department. An induction ceremony is held in the fall.

WYSE, Worldwide Youth and Engineering, is an academic team composed of top juniors and seniors recommended yearly by faculty. Team members compete in seven subject areas: Math, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Graphics, and Computer Science. |

Marching Band |

The marching band season begins with summer rehearsals and a two-week camp held within the school district. Once school begins, marching band meets during the regularly scheduled band rehearsal time. An extra marching band practice is scheduled on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 pm.

There are three curricular music classes at EHS: Mixed Choir, Concert Choir, and A cappella Choir. In addition, there is one extra-curricular vocal jazz ensemble called “Bravo!” The vocal music program also sponsors the Madrigal Dinner in December.

The Winter Guard is a performance-based group that competes in the MCCGA circuit. Group membership is by audition. Auditions are held in November and rehearsals are in the evenings once or twice each week. The season begins in December and concludes in March.

Students meet before and/or after school two or more times a month. Breakfast Club activities include Scholastic Book Fair, candy sales, and story time for second graders. The money raised through twice a year candy sales is used for donations to the media center, USO, and other events planned by the club. |

Chess Club is open to anyone who enjoys the fundamentals of Chess. Competitive matches are held among the club members and against other schools through the Gateway Chess League. Chess Club meets Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:15-4:00 in Room 318. Chess sets and clocks are provided.

This club is open to all students. We meet once each week and discuss a variety of craft techniques. We also make a variety of craft items such as scrapbook pages, crocheted items, blanket making, etc. These items are often sold as fund raisers for the club.

Students in all classes are eligible to run for a Class Officer, representing his/her grade 9-12. The offices are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historians. Elections take place at the start of each year.

ELL Constitution Club (Earn it, Learn it, or Lose it!) |

This group is for students interested in becoming lawyers, going into politics, working for the government, or just developing a better understanding of our Constitution and its interpretation by the U.S. Supreme Court. The group meets monthly to discuss specified constitutional topics. Students are responsible for reading Supreme Court decisions prior to meetings. This high school ELL chapter is sponsored in part by the adult ELL chapters in this area. Scholarship money may be available for students who participate in the group.

The goal of this group is to encourage and promote film appreciation through monthly film viewings and discussions. Past films include Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Napoleon Dynamite, and House of Flying Daggers.
