About

Lincoln Middle School is located in Edwardsville at the intersection of Rt. 157 and West Street close to the Madison County Courthouse and historic St. Louis Street. Turn of the century homes and a golf course are our most immediate neighbors and give our campus a small town feel. The Lincoln building until 1997 served as Edwardsville High School and from 1997 until 2003 as Edwardsville Middle School. In 2003, a second middle school, Liberty, was completed relieving overcrowding at the middle level. The programming at both schools is the same. Both schools are true middle schools with a block schedule, interdisciplinary teaming, a comprehensive health and physical education program, and an exploratory program.

With a student population of 785, Lincoln Middle houses approximately half of District 7's middle school students. Capacity for the building as it is currently configured is 1,000 students. The sixth grade is housed on the 00 and 100 levels of the newer section of the building facing Rt. 157. The seventh grade is housed on the second floor, with some science classes on the third floor, and the eighth grade is housed on the second and third floors of the original building.

All students are assigned to teams for their academic core subjects. These subjects are math, language arts, reading, science and social studies. In addition to these subjects students receive 44 minutes of daily instruction in physical education in the sixth and seventh grades and physical education/health in the eighth grade. Students also receive 44 minutes of daily instruction in exploratory classes. In the sixth grade students take Spanish, Computers, Art, and Health. In the seventh grade student take Computers, Health, Spanish, and Industrial Arts. In the eighth grade students take Spanish, Industrial Arts, Health, Art, and Computers.

In addition to our regular program Lincoln Middle School attempts to meet the needs of all middle level youngsters through a variety of special programs:

Honors Program: Students who demonstrate exceptional aptitude for writing and math are identified and clustered on specific teams at each grade level. Specialized instruction is provided in language arts and math at grades seven and eight and math at grade six.

Special Education Program: Special educators and regular educators work collaboratively 1) to identify individuals with disabilities, 2) to write individualized education plans, and 3) to deliver services to the student in the least restrictive environment.

Performing Arts: orchestra, chorus, and band grades six through eight meet during the activity period each day. Additionally, weekly sectional instruction is provided for band and orchestra students. Roughly 30% of our students participate in the performing arts program.

Prevention: Two prevention counselors are assigned to the middle schools to assist in the planning and implementation of prevention activities and to develop and run a parent volunteer program.

Academic Counselor: An academic counselor is assigned to the middle schools to help students improve their study skills, get organized, and perform better academically.

School Resource Officer: An officer with the Edwardsville Police Department is assigned to the middle school. The officer intervenes whenever any illegal activity is alleged to have taken place. The officer also assists on some disciplinary and on all crisis situations.

Support Services: Two assistant principals and a social worker provide individual and small group sessions on an as needed basis to help with personal, school and social relationship problems.

Parent Volunteer Program: Parent volunteers work with our administrators, social worker, and prevention counselor to provide fun activities with a prevention theme both during the school day and after school.

Athletics and Activities: A comprehensive athletics and activities program, which includes thirteen athletic teams that compete interscholastically, an intramural program, and fourteen clubs, is provided.

The students at Lincoln Middle School have performed consistently well on State Assessments. On 2007 State Assessments, eighty-eight (88%) of all students met or exceeded state state standards in reading. Ninety-four (94%) of all students met or exceeded state standards in math. Students testing in the area of science at 7th grade met or exceeded at ninety-three (93%). ISAT testing will take place March 3-14, 2008

Each year we establish a theme for our school. This year out theme is, F.I.T. to Excel, Ready to G.O. This was developed by our prevention groups to encourage our students to work hard academically, join in the fun of school by participating in athletics, activities, and performing arts. We also want our students making good choices for themselves and helping their friends to make the same good choices. GO WILDCATS!!
