Our second grade students are gearing up for their performance of "Rockin' with the Dinosaurs" to be held on Thursday, March 4th. We look forward to a fabulous evening!

Looking ahead, we anticipate the Young Author and Learning Fair presentations on March 18th. Once again we broke the previous year's record for participation---way to go!

Choosing the right book for your child can sometimes be difficult. Try these tips for selecting books based on your child's reading ability:
*"The Ten Finger Test"-Open a book to the middle and ask your child to read a page aloud. Hold up one finger for each word missed. If all ten are down, it is too difficult. If only one or two are down, it is too easy. Anywhere between three and eight is challenging enough to improve reading, but not too difficult to cause frustration.
*"Emergent Readers" - know some sight words and can sound out short words. Choose books with large print and few words per page. Illustrations should match the words. Most children are at this level in Kindergarten.
*"Novice Readers" - know many words or can sound them out. They will have smaller print. There will be a picture and a paragraph on every page or so. Grade 1.
*"Independent Readers" - can read smoothly and with expression. They understand most of what is read without needing too much help. Print is smaller and sentences longer. Gr. 2 through life!

Looking forward to Spring,
