If you wish to participate in the Saturday tournaments or the Wednesday duel meets, you have to know how to record notation.           Here is a sample notation sheet.  There are directions all over the web or ask at practice and you will be taught.

Also, if you want to go to the Saturday tournaments you need to be a member of the US Chess Federation (USCF).  You can purchase a year's membership for $25 at their website.
