Letters to Next Year’s Second Graders

Dear Second Graders,

You will have to know that your teacher is Mrs. Burns. She’s nice, loves teddy bears, and has an herb garden. You will start having homework. In Social Studies you will study cities and make maps. One of my favorite things in Social Studies is the town we made out of milk cartons and other boxes. In second grade you will study a lot about dinosaurs. One thing we did in our dinosaur unit was make paper mache dinosaur eggs. Here are a few other things you learn in second grade: cursive, and you learn about environments (oceans, deserts, rain forests, and forests), Native Americans, famous Black Americans, and food. In the ocean unit you get to go inside an inflated fin whale. Around Christmas time you will study all about different ways people celebrate Christmas all around the world. The last few days of school you will make homemade ice cream. That’s all I have to write. Have a fun time in second grade. Thanks for reading.

Dear Second Graders,

Second Grade is a lot of fun. When you study Dinosaurs, you make paper mache eggs. You put your eggs in the Dinosaur Museum. You also learn Cursive. Cursive is a lot of fun. My favorite thing we studied was Environments. We studied the Desert, the Forest, the Ocean and the Rainforest. We also went on a lot of field trips. We went to the Science Center, the Art Museum, the Downtown Edwardsville Walk, the Arch and we went to Woodland.

What was my favorite? The dinosaurs. But that’s not all that’s fun. We go on field trips like the Arch and the Art Museum and the Downtown walking field trip. And we made clay pots and we made clay dinosaurs.

We study the city first. Then we study Early America. Early America was a fun unit. Around the World was next. The next unit was the dinosaurs. The dinosaurs were the best unit.

Dear Second Grade,

Second grade is a bunch of fun. You go on a bunch of field trips, like to the Science Center, Arch and the Art Museum. We study about all different stuff, like Native Americans. At the end you get to be in a powwow. Mrs. Burns' class were the Inuits. And you get to make a clay pot. You learn cursive in second grade. Another thing we study is Early America. We study Holidays Around the World. It is mostly about Christmas. My favorite thing in second grade was studying about all the different Environments. In February we have Black History Month. That is where some different people read a reading on a famous Black American. You make ice cream at the end of the year.

I remember when our class made a kids' city. It was so fun! And then I remember when we made our presidents reports. When we studied the ocean, it was so fun! And it wasn’t too long ago and we made an Environment. And then this was so cool; we got to make an ice castle. I loved it! And then we went to Woodland for a tour for next year.

Dear Second Grader,

All about 2^nd grade:

When you’re in 2^nd grade you will have a lot of fun! You will go on a lot of field trips. One of the field trips you will be going on is the arch. It is a lot of fun but…you will not go up in it. In the beginning of the year, you will be make a city out of milk cartons. It is fun too! During Christmas you will do a project called Christmas Around the World. You will learn cursive, go on other field trips, & learn about Indians. When we study Indians, you will make clay pots! (it’s fun, trust me!) You will have fun in 2^nd grade! A LOT of fun!!

Dear Second Grade Reader,

At the beginning of the year we studied Native Americans. When we studied Native Americans we did a Powwow. We were the Inuits. When we went to Arch we learned about Early America and the Arch being built. When we studied Dinosaurs, we made paper mache` eggs. It was really fun studying Dinosaurs. In Second Grade you learn how to write in cursive. It’s not very hard because it is just like the letters only they have a bunch of squiggles. At the end of the year you get to go to Woodland and get a tour of it before you get to go next year. The next day you get to go on a walk of Edwardsville. I like Second Grade. I hope you like it, too!
