One Room Schoolhouse

On Friday, November 21, 2003, the second graders at N. O. Nelson Elementary pretended that they attended a one-room schoolhouse like the early settlers. They wrote about their experiences.

Last Friday it was a one-room schoolhouse. I liked when we did those activities. They were all fun. We got to use the quill pen. We had punishments if we are bad. We got to use the slate boards, too. It was all fun at the one room schoolhouse.

On Friday we had a one-room schoolhouse. I felt scared when the teachers walked in. Mrs. Burns had a ruler in hand. Some other teachers had bells. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot to tell you, we had a spelling bee .We all had to try to spell precipitation. I got precipitation wrong. I was mad.

On Friday we had one room schoolhouse. When the teachers came in the gym, I was scared. When we entered the room, the girls had to curtsey and the boys had to bow. Everybody got to write with quill pens but me. I had to leave. We had a spelling bee. It was not the usual.

On Friday, my class dressed up like early settlers. The young settlers had to work a lot. The young settler’s job was helping growing corn. They also had fun by playing games like marbles. When the boys came in, they had to bow. The punishments were holding a dictionary on each hand and another punishment was getting hooked to the chalkboard.

On Friday it was the one-room schoolhouse. We used slate boards. We made hornbooks. We did a lot of activities. We used quill pens. We had three punishments. One was sitting on a chair with a dunce cap. Another was getting hooked onto the blackboard. The hardest punishment was holding a dictionary in each hand, but your hands had to be straight out, but you also had to stand up straight. We had spelling bees. I wore a dress with a white shirt under it and my Mary Jane shoes. We called Mrs. Burns, Mistress Burns. I was scared at first, but then I got used to Mrs. Burns, I mean Mistress Burns. When we had to enter the one-room schoolhouse, the girls had to curtsey to Mistress Burns and the boys had to bow to Mistress Burns.

One Room School House

When the teachers came out of the doors, I was scared. The hornbooks were hard to make. The boys had to bow and the girls had to wear a dress. Our spelling words were hard. Spelling precipitation was hard to spell it.

Today we have to write about one-room schoolhouse. Back in the old days, the children had to write with a quill pen. Their handwriting had to be very good. Their punishments were wearing a dunce cap and putting books on their arms. Their arms had to be straight. The last punishment was they got hung on the chalkboard. They had to write their spelling words on a slate board. Back in the old days, they had to work very hard. I feel real bad for the kids back in the old days. The boys wore long shirts and knee pants.

Today is Monday, Nov.24, 2003. Friday we had one-room schoolhouse. It scared me a little bit when the teachers came in the gym with neat costumes, bells in their hands, and had rulers in their hands slapping them. We had to march to our classroom. It was very hard to march in a dress. We also had to bow if you were a boy and curtsey if you were a girl. I wore a skirt with flowers and a bonnet with flowers and a red shirt. We got to make our own hornbooks with the ABC’s and count to 20. We called Mrs. Burns Mistress Burns. She called us by our last names, too. That was kind of weird. There were three different tables. The last one was the teen-agers. The second row was mostly close to 10 years old. The first row was the little ones. I sat at the first table. We also wrote with chalk. That was kind of fun to me. That’s how our day was.

Friday was the one-room school house day. It was fun, fun, fun! We wrote with a quill pen. Some people got punished. Some people had to get books on their arms. Some people had to sit in the Dunce chair. We had art. We made a hornbook. We had a spelling bee. Mistress Burns made us spell precipitation. That was hard. The girls had to curtsey. The boys had to bow. I wore a skirt, an apron and a hat. It was so, so, so, so fun!!! We wrote on slate boards and we played games. I was very, very scared. So scared, I was about to burst into tears when I saw Mrs. Burns. She was very strict. Oh, I will not end it with a bad saying. It was fun, fun, fun! Well, early settlers came and started one-room schools. And that is the end.

On Friday it was one-room schoolhouse. When the teachers came in, I felt scared. We had to bow and curtsey. The boys had to bow; the girls had to curtsey. We made a hornbook and got to write with quill pens. We did our spelling words on slate board. It was cool! There was a punishment: the Dunce cap. I bet if I was there and sat on a chair and had a cap that said Dunce, I would not like that!

On one-room schoolhouse it was very fun. But, when you were punished, I know I would blame myself for what I did and say I am sorry for what I did. I felt very scared when I saw Mrs. Burns in the gym. I got freaked out. We had to curtsey and boys had to bow to Mrs. Burns. She was very mean, but she was acting. We got to write with some ink and a feather quill.

Today is 11/24/03 and my name is Eli. Last Friday was one-room schoolhouse. It was fun when Mrs. Burns slapped a ruler on her hand. It was fun. When we came in, the boys had to bow and the girls had to curtsey. I liked school. It is so, so, so, so fun. And I liked Friday.

Last week on Friday it was the one-room schoolhouse. It started out scary, but then I got used to it. The teachers were acting very mean and bitter. That is what scared me so much. Then when we did our spelling test, we used slate boards. Then for the bonus words Mrs. Burns lined us up in a row and just when you get a letter wrong she said incorrect.

Friday was one-room schoolhouse. When Mrs. Burns came to the gym, I was scared. When we got to the classroom, we had to bow and curtsey. The lights where off, but, good, it was a sunny day. We had a spelling bee. I felt bad to get it wrong. If you got it right, you got to cut in front of someone. After the spelling bee we read My Great Aunt Arizona. It was about someone named Arizona. We did some papers on the book. Then it was lunchtime. After lunch we got to use quills. Then it was time to go. It was fun!

Today is Monday. Last Friday we had a one-room schoolhouse. It was fun and when you came in the door you had to bow or curtsey. I loved doing our spelling test on our slate boards. I wore a bonnet, a long sleeve shirt, dress shoes or tennis shoes and maybe a straw hat. It was fun. I love doing that. We used quill pens. That was really fun. I have a question for Mrs. Burns. Can we do that again not just writing with the quill pens but acting like the old days again?

The one-room schoolhouse was fun, but I hated when Mrs. Burns was so strict. If you got in trouble, you would put on a bonnet or sit in a chair with a dunce cap on. You would wear a hat and khakis and that was how the one room schoolhouse lived. They wrote with a quill pen. The quill pen was fun. We made a hornbook and then it was time for lunch. I saw girls with a picnic basket and that is all.

Friday was one-room schoolhouse. It was fun. When the teachers came into the gym, they weren’t smiling. They were slapping a ruler on their hands and walking up and down the line inspecting us! We were all dressed in clothes that they wore back then. When we started to put our things away, Mrs. Burns said, "There shall be no talking!" Then, as we were done putting our things away, we had to line up by the door. We had to bow or curtsey to "Mistress Burns". Then we walked to our seats. They were arranged in rows. I sat in the back. I was a teenager. We took attendance and Bethany was absent. People forgot their names on their homework. If they forgot it in the front row, they had to write their names 10 times! Middle row 20, and back row 30! We took spelling a lot different! We had slates and chalk. Mrs. Burns said the word, we wrote it down, and held it up. Then we had a spelling bee. We had to spell precipitation! "Mistress Burns" tapped her ruler on something and we had to march to our seats. She called us Miss or Master. We had an outhouse and a well. We went to do art after lunch. We wrote with quill pens with ink after art. It was fun. We did use pencils and crayons, but "Mistress Burns" called them new inventions. When "Mistress Burns" turned on the lights, she called them oil lamps. The punishments were get hung on the board (The hook), sit on the stool and face the wall, and balance a dictionary in each hand. It was a scary and fun day!

On Friday we had a day that we had a one-room schoolhouse and it was fun. We got to write with quill pens. Oh, and for our spelling, we got to do it on slate boards. I was scared when the teachers came in to the gym. As punishments, you would have to wear a dunce cap and sit on a stool. You also had to be clipped to the chalkboard. Oh, and every time you went in the classroom, you had to curtsey or bow. The kids writing had to be very good and they had to work a lot. I feel bad for the kids.

On Friday we had a one-room schoolhouse. It was weird but fun! Mistress Burns was acting out of hand. It was a scary day no doubt about that. We got to play like pioneers the early settlers. It was fun some of us had to wear a dunce cap. It was not fun. We got to write with quill pens.

On Friday we had to dress up like in the early days. Also, the consequences were, well, one is where the teacher gives you two books (two big books), and puts the book on your hands with your arms straight. Also, another is where she gets a clip and tells you to come up her in the front of the class and will clip you on the slate board. Also, you have to stand on your tiptoes. Also, you had to sit in the corner with a Dunce cap on sometimes. You have to stand on a block sometimes. Also, there is a hornbook that kids used. Hornbooks were used because if they needed a letter. Also, to help them write.

On Friday we had our spelling bee for the bonus words. It was a good thing we didn’t write our bonus words, but it’s good when you stand up in a line and spell it. We had to do good handwriting. That was pretty hard. For punishments the teachers will either hook up a kid or give a kid one book on the left and one on the right to hold.

On Friday it was one-room schoolhouse day. We had to write on slate boards with chalk for our spelling test. I was talking when I was not supposed to, so Mrs. Burns hung me on the chalkboard. Well, I was touching the ground, barely, and the other person that was talking was Marcus. He had to hold two big dictionaries. We had to call Mrs. Burns "Mistress Burns". I had to wear one of Mrs. Burns’ outfits.
