One Room School

On Friday, December 3rd, the second grade classes at N. O. Nelson Elementary pretended that they attended a one-room school like the early pioneers. The children in Mrs. Burns’ class did a narrative writing about their experiences.

On Friday it was one room schoolhouse. I wore a plaid shirt, a straw hat and jeans. My favorite part was when I got to write my name with a quill pen. I did not get punished once. Mrs. Burns was sometimes strict and sometimes herself.

On Friday it was one room schoolhouse day. Our teacher was very strict and she scared us. Some of the punishments were the hook, the dunce chair, holding heavy books, standing on a block and the ruler slap. We had to do lots of work. We did a spelling bee, we had to write with quill pens, we had to do a hornbook word find, we had to do a spelling test on a slate board, we had to a make a hornbook of A, B, C’s, we had to do a slate board unscramble, we had a school house quilt block, and we had a bunch of writing. Some of the clothes I wore were a button shirt, a neckerchief, boots, a vest, a raccoon hat, short pants, long socks and a belt.

We dressed up as pioneers. I bowed to the teacher. The teachers were strict. I was scared to get my hand slapped by a ruler.

On Friday we dressed up as pioneers. The teachers were really strict I was scared. I wore boots, jeans, a white shirt, and a straw hat. My mom made me wear it. The punishments were on the hook, dunce chair, holding books, standing on the block, and the ruler slap. These are the things that I don’t like. I don’t like the spelling bee, the quill pens and the hornbook find. I liked the slate boards, slate board unscramble, writing, and schoolhouse quilt block.

On Friday we had one room schoolhouse. When we were in the gym Mrs. Burns scared me. Here are the scary parts: if you broke your chalk, you would get hung by your hair. I didn’t break my chalk. I wanted to get hung by my hair. It was fun.

Friday was one room schoolhouse day. Here is some information about pioneer schools. Teachers were very strict; in fact they sometimes scared the kids. Some of the older kids played pranks on little kids and on the teacher. If they got caught playing pranks they would get punished these are some of them: the hook, the dunce chair, holding books, standing on the block, and ruler slap.

On Friday it was one room schoolhouse day. The teachers were strict. Mrs. Burns kind of scared me. Mrs. Burns dressed up like a pioneer. She had glasses, a long black skirt, a cameo pin, a blouse, and her hair in a bun. I wore long pants pulled up to my knees, long socks pulled up to my knees, a neckerchief, and a gray shirt. The hardest thing was to do our spelling test on a slate board and the spelling bee. I liked using the quill pins to write our names. One of the punishments was the dunce chair.

On Friday I went to olden school day. I got scared. The teachers were very strict. I wore a bonnet, an apron, and a red white checked dress. The thing I really didn’t like about the costume was the dress shoes. That was very annoying. The good thing was that I didn’t get a punishment. The punishments were scary. I can’t believe that teachers did that kind of punishments like hang you on a hook by your hair, and slap you on your hand with a ruler. Since we had to act like people in the pioneer days, the class did a spelling bee. It was fun. We wrote with quills and we wrote on slate boards. My class made replicas of the hornbook. That was the best part. The thing that really surprised me was how the teachers dressed. They wore a white blouse and they wore long skirts, and they wore glasses! But the thing that really scared me was when the teachers came into the gym to get us.

On one room schoolhouse our teacher was strict. I was scared. When we read a book Mrs. Burns told us why she was strict. The clothes that I was wearing were a bandana, pants rolled up and a button shirt. It was fun. I even told Mrs. Burns. We balanced dictionaries on our hands. I liked it. It was fun.

On Friday, it was one room schoolhouse. We had to dress like pioneers. I wore a dress and tennis shoes. We had fun. The teachers were very strict. In the morning we had a spelling bee. I broke my chalk so I had to sit in the dunce chair. It was not fun at all. I could have had a worse punishment. At lunch most people packed their lunch in a basket. In the afternoon we wrote with quill pens. Then we did worksheets. The worksheets were easy except the word find. It was hard. I was supposed to wear hikers.

Last Friday was the one room schoolhouse for 2nd grade. We had to dress like we where pioneers. Some of the things that the girls wore were bonnets, aprons, and a long dress. The teachers were very, very, very, strict. But Mrs. Burns was not that strict. At school we did some work that they did back then. Some of the stuff we did was to do our spelling test on a slate board and make a hornbook with our ABCs on it. Mrs. Burns made us do a spelling bee. If we got a letter or word wrong she would say wrong in a very mean way. But it was still fun.

On Friday we had a one-room schoolhouse. The teachers were strict. It scared Abbie, Alyya, Lizzy and me. If we broke the chalk we would get punished. I did get punished. I had to wear a dress and dress shoes. I hated to wear that. Besides, it itched. One of the punishments was hanging on the hook. It was scary. When Mrs. Burns came in the gym and scared Abbie, I was scared, too.

On Friday the teachers scared the kids because it was one room schoolhouse day. I learned there were fierce consequences like having your hair pulled. Ow! Or being hit with a stick! Or holding heavy book for a long time! I wore long pants and a red shirt.

The teachers were strict and scared the kids with the ruler. The clothes that they wore were a shawl, long dress shirt, basket, an apron, dress shoes, and ribbons. Boys’ clothes were vest, neckerchiefs, boots, straw hats, button shirt, long socks, belts, and short pants. The punishments were the hook, dunce chair, holding books, standing on the block, and the ruler slap. I was scared when Mrs. Burns walked in the gym. I was so scared that I almost fainted. The best part and the hardest part was writing with the quill pen. I am glad I did not go to school back then. I would rather stay home than go to school. If I went to school back then I probably wouldn’t even make it to lunchtime. I would faint before lunch and recess. I would run away and never come back to school again.

On Friday was when our teacher, Mrs. Burns, was strict. She even scared tons of people when we broke our chalk. She even said that if we write badly we would get slapped with the ruler. She scared the life out of me! The girls’ clothes were bonnets, long dresses, skirts, aprons, dress shoes, and ribbons. The boys wore vests, neckerchiefs, boots, straw hats, button shirts, long socks, belts, and short pants. When we were bad we got punishments. The punishments were the hook, dunce chair, holding books, standing on the block, and the ruler slap. Our work that we had was spelling bee, quill pen, hornbook, word find, slate board, hornbook a, b, c,’ s slate board, unscramble, schoolhouse quilt block, and writing.

I was scared because the teachers were strict. I was wearing a dress, bonnet, and an apron. I am happy because the next day the teachers were regular, but the best part of all was it was fun when we used the slate boards.

On Friday was the one room schoolhouse day. I don’t know how the pioneer children lived! Their teachers were mean, they dressed up every day, their punishments were bad, and I can’t imagine going and doing it every day! Mrs. Burns scared me when she was acting like those teachers would. We had to bow or curtsy when we got into the room. Girls were called misses and boys were called masters. I loved writing with the quill. It was easy. Instead of spelling tests, they had spelling bees. We had one. It was fun. We got our picture taken. Mrs. Burns was wearing a white blouse with a cameo pin and a long black skirt. She doesn’t wear glasses but she did that day. Just to prove to you that they dressed up, this is what they wore: girls wore bonnets, a long dress or skirt, an apron, ribbons in their hair, and dress shoes. They also carried baskets. Boys wore straw hats, short pants and button shirts, vests, belts, long socks, and boots. Isn’t that dressy? Anyway, it was a GREAT day!

We had a spelling test with a slate board. We dressed in dresses, aprons, bonnets, boots, vests, and long pants. It was fun I really liked one room schoolhouse day.

Friday was one room schoolhouse day. I was dressed like a pioneer. I wore a pink dress, a white apron, and a white skullcap. We had to do our spelling test in a very different way. Mrs. Burns told us if we broke the chalk we’d have a punishment. The punishments were that you’d have to sit on a chair and wear a dunce cap. The other punishment was you had to stand on your toes. The teacher would hang your hair on a clip and it stuck on the board. You had to stand on your toes because if you didn’t you’d pull your hair. So there were more punishments that I wouldn’t want to write them because it would take me forever. The teachers were very strict because there were different ages of children and different grades.
