Students in Mrs. Burns’ Class researched and wrote a report about a shark.

MAKO SHARK

The Mako shark is an interesting shark. The body features are long thin teeth, cone-shaped snout, and short-fins. It looks dark gray-blue on top and white on the belly. It’s 5-8 feet long and weighs 1,000 pounds. It’s found in tropical seas near shore. It eats fish, tuna, and swordfish. Other facts are, it can jump out of the water and it is dangerous. It is also the fastest swimming shark.

Blacktip Reef Shark

The blacktip reef shark is a very common shark. They are 6 feet long and blue with black tips on the end of their fins. They eat reef fish, sturgeon fish, and mullet fish. They can have 2 to 4 pups at a time. Their blunt snout can smell blood 2 miles away. They can be easily put in aquariums. They are also found in coral reefs and lagoons. They are very interesting fish.

Bonnethead Shark

The bonnethead shark is fun to learn about. It eats small fish, mollusks, and hard-shelled prey. Its length is 3.3 feet. It has a round head body. The bonnet head shark is found in the East Atlantic and West Pacific oceans, in surf zones, reefs and on sandy bottoms. Its harmless to people. The bonnet head shark travels in schools.

Great White Shark

The great white shark is totally wicked. The great white shark has 3,000 teeth. The great white sharks babies eat fish, stingray, and other baby sharks. The older ones eat sea lions, sea turtles, whales, and sea otters. You can find them all around the world. The great white shark’s weight is 7,000 pounds. The great white shark travels in groups.

Porbeagle Shark

The porbeagle shark is cool to learn about. The porbeagle shark is dark gray on top and has a patch of white on a fin. It is shaped like a torpedo. He eats fish, squid, and flounder. Megamouth Shark

The megamouth shark is interesting to learn about. It eats organisms. Its length is about 16.5 feet long. It weighs 1,650 pounds. It is black, brown and white. It lives in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Indonesia. It has a short snout and it also has a stout body. Its predators are the cookiecutter shark and the sperm whale. Scientist have found scars from the cookiecutter shark on almost all megamouths. The megamouth was first found in 1976. It swims very slowly. Its first 5 top teeth are smaller than its first 5 bottom teeth. It has 50 rows of very small teeth. That is why a megamouth is interesting.

The Greenland Shark

Greenland sharks are truly amazing sea creatures. Greenland sharks are 21 feet long. Greenland sharks come in many colors. Some are blackish, and some are the color of coffee, coffee brown. You may find a Greenland shark on the Labrador coast off Greenland and in the Arctic Waters. No wonder Greenland sharks are called Greenland sharks. Greenland sharks eat fish, dead cetaceans and pinnipeds. Greenland sharks will turn bluish gray if the epidermis is rubbed of. Plus, Greenland shark’s eyes glow in the dark. Yep. Greenland sharks are truly amazing.

Hammerhead Shark

The hammerhead shark is cool. It eats rays, octopuses, other sharks, squid, and crustaceans. It weighs 500 pounds, but can weigh 1,000 pounds. It is brown and gray but it has a white stomach. The length of it is 11.5 feet. It has a wide thick head with the eyes at the margins. Its teeth are triangular with extremely serrated edges. It is found in tropical and sub tropical water worldwide. It is also found in warm water along coastlines, but it is in colder waters in the summer. The hammerhead can be very dangerous. It kills the stingray by using its hammer to pin the stingray while it takes bites from the stingray’s wings. That’s why I think the hammerhead shark is cool.

Sand Tiger Shark

The sand tiger shark is a very interesting creature. The sand tiger shark can also be called sand shark. The color of it is brown. It has gray spots. It also has a flattened snout and a bulky body. You can find it in tropical oceans and in coral reefs. It will attack anything in its way. It swallows air into its belly. It eats fish. It is about ten feet long.

The Galapagos Shark is very cool! They are found in warm water and tropical seas near islands and the Galapagos Island. They are found in the Pacific Ocean, too. Their teeth are serrated and triangular. Their length is 10 feet long. They can reach 12 feet long. They eat squid, octopus, and they eat prey off the ocean floor. They swim in schools. They are aggressive. They are sometimes called gray reef whaler. Their colors are gray on the top and off white on the belly. Its tail has a black edge.

The Nurse shark

The nurse shark is cool to learn about. The nurse shark eats sea urchins, coral, lobster, squid, octopus, shrimp, crabs, sea snails, and fish. They can be found in shallow warm waters. It is dark gray-brown. Its 2-13 feet long and the largest are 14 feet long. They live in the Atlantic Ocean. It is harmless. It has a wide head and it’s skin is smooth to touch.

Thresher shark

The thresher shark is cool to learn about. It eats fish and squid. This shark has a long tail. The tail is most of its body. Another fact is that this shark has small teeth. It leaps out of the water. It is hunted for its fin. Its length is 16.5 to 20 feet long. Where you can find this shark is at the Eastern and Western Atlantic Ocean and the Central Pacific Ocean and at the Indo-west Pacific Ocean. The color is dark blue with some gray. It is a very strong swimmer.

Lemon Sharks

Lemon sharks are cool! They eat fish, mollusks, and crustaceans. Their backs are deep yellow and their bellies are off white. Their teeth are slightly curved and triangular they lose teeth one at a time every 7 to 8 days! They can grow up to 8 or 10 feet long. The longest one ever found was 12 feet long! It is found off Latin and South America and the Gulf of Mexico. They have been known to attack people. They do well in captivity.

Luminous Shark

The luminous shark is cool. The luminous shark eats large fish and whales. The luminous shark is harmless to humans. It lives deep in the ocean about 3500 meters down. The luminous shark is brown and its belly has a green glow. It is 20 inches long. It has a blunt snout and the dorsal fin is small and it is closer to it’s tail. The luminous shark is found near Mexico and California.

The whale shark is the biggest shark and fish. It weighs 15 tons and is 25 feet long! That’s big! The babies are more than 2 feet long. It has light-yellow markings (random stripes and dots) on its very thick dark gray skin. It has a huge mouth that is 4 feet wide. Its mouth is at the top of its head. It is found worldwide in warm water. It is harmless to humans. It is a filter feeder. It eats plankton. It can process over 1500 gallons of water each hour. It has 3,000 tiny teeth. Females are larger than males. Groups are hardly ever seen.

Tiger Shark

The tiger shark is gray and brown on top and white on the bottom. It is ten feet long. Its teeth are very serrated. It has a large thick body. The tiger shark likes to eat other sharks, crabs, and mammals and about anything else that they can catch alive. You can find tiger sharks in warm seas.

Bull Shark

The bull shark is cool. The bull shark lives close to shore and can live in fresh water. It has been found in the Mississippi River. It is off white on the belly and gray on the top. It eats birds, turtles, fish, mollusks, rays, sharks, and dolphins. Its tooth is one inch long. It attacks more often then most sharks. It weighs 200-500 pounds. It is 7 feet long. It has very small eyes. Its first fin is longer than its second fin.

Goblin Shark

The goblin shark is amazing. The goblin shark’s length is 11 feet. It eats squid, crustaceans, fish, other sharks, stingrays, and crabs. The goblin shark is probably harmless, but has rarely been encountered. The goblin shark is found in the Western Pacific and the Eastern Atlantic.
