Pottery Making at the Watershed Nature Center

On Monday, October 2, 2000, Mrs. Burns' Second Grade Class from N. O. Nelson Elementary School visited the Watershed Nature Center in Edwardsville, Illinois. The students made pots from clay soil gathered at the lake's edge. They learned how Native Americans made their pinch pots. Several parents and teachers helped with the project.

Getting instructions from Mrs. Hackett.

Listening like deer.

We saw turtles on a log.

We saw butterflies, too.

Digging soil at the water's edge.

Parents helped us dig.

We had fun digging!

Not too dirty!

Mrs. Hackett showed us how to roll and pinch the clay.

Getting started with our own pots.

Parents gave advice.

Finishing touches.

Our instructional assistant helped, too.

Helping pinch edges.

Decorating our pots.

We'll let the pots dry before firing in a kiln.

A quiet moment on the deck.

Thanking "Mother Earth" for the soil and pledging to take good care of nature.
