WelcomeWelcome to an exciting year of second grade adventures. Join us, as we explore and learn about communities, Native Americans, Early America, dinosaurs, oceans and more!
We are proud of our thematic units, which integrate all areas of the curriculum. Our language arts program will be based on skills outlined in district goals and standards using a literature based reading series, literature collections or other types of print to teach the skills. This program integrates essential writing and oral language skills with reading. We will also emphasize phonics, making letter-sound connections to make new words and build vocabulary. The weekly spelling lists, which focus on sound, structure and meaning of words, are closely linked to reading and writing vocabularies. Research shows that children learn language by using it, writing it, thinking it and reading it.
We will continue to integrate technology into the curriculum. Students will use computers to facilitate the development of subject content areas using district-approved software to enrich the curriculum. Second graders will also participate in the Accelerated Reader program to focus on reading comprehension.
The children in our classes will be learning in partner, small and large group activities using a wide variety of materials and allowing students of all ability levels to be challenged to do their best.
While working with the Everyday Mathematics curriculum, the children will be involved in explorations to develop good fact power and other math skills in order to become life-long mathematical thinkers.
One of the components of our program is active homework participation. The amount and length of homework assignments in each second grade class will vary by units, skills or chapters, as each classroom establishes its own identity. Through your support and encouragement, we can continue to involve your child in a "print-rich" environment at home as well as at school. This partnership will enhance your childs successful learning experiences.
We are looking forward to a great school year!
Sincerely,
Second Grade Teachers
