Whale Reports

Students in Mrs. Burns' second grade class at N. O. Nelson Elementary School wrote reports about whales.  Students used the Inspiration program to web facts and the Alpha Smarts mini word processor to write the reports.  Pictures were drawn and scanned into the computer.

 

Humpback Whale

The Humpback Whale eats plankton and small fish. The Humpback is a mammal. It’s found by the surface of the ocean. The colors of the Humpbacks are white, gray and black. The Humpback can go as fast as 16 miles per hour. It is 52 feet long. It does these tricks: breaches and lobtailing.

Bowhead Whales

The Bowhead Whale’s mouth is up to ten feet. It weighs over 80 to 110 tons. It grows up to 50 to 60 feet. It has baleen. It is black with white skin below the mouth. It is found in the Arctic Ocean. It can communicate with other whales. It has 350 pairs of baleen. Its eyes are very small. The calves tail is born first. It has two blowholes. It can dive for almost an hour. Its speed is 10 to 12 mph. It eats plankton and krill.

Orca

The Orca is also called the Killer Whale and Wolf of the Sea. It’s speed can go up to 30 mph. Its only enemy is the human. It is a toothed whale. It eats Seal. It is the largest dolphin. It has black and white patches.

Minke Whale

The Minke Whale’s speed is 3-16 mph. It has two breathing holes. It eats Plankton and krill. It does shorter dives. It is found in Polar seas. Its color is dark gray. Its length is 25-30 feet. Its weight is 6-7.5 tons.

Orca Whale

The Orca Whale is found worldwide. The Orca Whale eats fish, squid, seals, sharks, octopus, turtles, birds and young Blue Whales. Its only enemy is people. It is a toothed whale. It has one blowhole. It can do tail slaps and does breaching. It is white and black. It is the biggest dolphin. It is called the Wolf of the Sea. It weighs 8,000-12,000 pounds. The length is 27-33 feet.

Humpback Whale

The Humpback Whale is very amazing. It can do lots of amazing things. It eats plankton, mackerel, small fish and sand eel. It can do lots of tricks like spyhopping, breaching, and lobtailing. Its weight is 30 to 50 tons. Its speed is 3-165. It can go to 500 feet to 700 feet deep. It can be 52 feet long. Its color is white, gray, black, and mottled gray. It can live by the surface of the ocean. Some live in shallow water.

Narwhal

The Narwhal lives in the icy waters of the Arctic seas. It can stay under water from 7 to 20 minutes. The Narwhal is bluish gray with white blotches. The Narwhal’s enemies are polar bears, man, Inuit hunters, Orcas and sharks. The Narwhal eats squid and shrimp. The Narwhal weighs 1.8 tons. A Narwhal’s length is 16 feet. A Narwhal has a tusk on the front of its face. A Narwhal makes sounds like clicks, squeals and whistles.

Sperm Whale

The Sperm whale has a huge brain. Its blowhole is

s-shaped. Their enemies are people. It is a toothed whale. It eats squid and fish. Its speed is about 3-27 mph. It is found worldwide. It color is dark gray. The Sperm Whale does lobtails. The Sperm Whale also does logging. That is when it stays still at the surface of the water. It has 5-foot flippers. It weighs 40-50 pounds. Its size is 50-60 feet.

The Sperm Whale eats Giant Squid, fish and Octopus. Moby Dick was a Sperm Whale. A Sperm Whale can live over 70 years of age. The Sperm whale’s a mammal. It is grayish black in color. It does tricks like logging and lobtailing. When it swims at the surface, it swims from 3-9 mph. If it is in danger it swims from 21-27 mph. Males weigh 40-50 tons. Females weigh 14-18 tons. Males are 50-60 feet long. Females are 30-40 feet long. They are found worldwide, but not in the Polar Regions. They used to be hunted for things like oil.

Beluga Whales are found in the Arctic oceans. Beluga Whales can weigh up to 3300 pounds. The Beluga Whale has teeth. Beluga Whales eat fish. Polar bears eat Beluga Whales.

Bottlenose Dolphin

The Bottlenose Dolphin is a fast swimmer. It can jump 20 feet out of the water. A Bow rider Dolphin gets its name for hitching a ride on a bow wave in front of a ship. Dolphins have sickle shaped dorsal fins. Dolphins eat squid and fish. Dolphins live in small groups called pods. Bottlenose Dolphins live in the Gulf of Mexico and Southern Florida. Bottlenose Dolphins can weigh up to 1,400 pounds and can be as long as 12 feet. Bottlenose Dolphins can be dark blue-gray to brown-gray in color.

Its body movements are diving and spouting.

Right Whale

Right Whales live in temperate oceans. The Right Whale does not swim very fast, only 6mph. The Right Whale is 50 ft long and weighs 120,000 pounds. Right Whales have two blowholes. Right Whales eat plankton and krill. They have 200-270 pairs of baleen. Humans hunt whales for their oil.
