District 7 Summer Zone 2017

Where Summer, Fun, and Friends Meet

Our 2017 summer enrichment day camp program offers activities designed to provide opportunities and experiences to stretch your child’s imagination, spark a sense of curiosity and wonder, strengthen social and physical development skills, and create new friendships. We strive for programming that is balanced to meet the interest levels of all students while allowing the elements of play to be woven throughout our educational activities.

Our Summer Zone staff consists of familiar faces from our Kid Zone program, our school year before and after school program. Our college-age staff counselors are studying across the fields of elementary education, exercise science, psychology, nursing, biological science, social work, and/or speech pathology.

Socks and tennis shoes are required daily for all Summer Zone activities. We ask that students not wear flip flops, sandals, and/or crocs as they are not appropriate for our recreational activities.

Students will need to provide swimming attire, towels, and a bag to store wet bathing items on Tuesday and Thursday.

Dress for the weather and to have fun! We recommend that parents apply sunscreen prior to arrival, and send a hat and a water bottle for those sunny afternoons.

Art will be messy! Students will need to bring a paint shirt each Monday. It is suggested that each student have a long sleeved, button down type shirt that may be worn over regular clothes. District 7 Medication Procedures - Summer Zone

The Edwardsville school District has policies and procedures in place to allow for medications to be administered by school personnel. If your child has critical care medication needs, please indicate on the registration form and attach the completed Request for Medication to Be Administered at School form.

The physician orders are required for all medicine administered at school, including over-the-counter medicines such as Tylenol and cough drops. Schools are required to follow Illinois licensing laws, as well as, the Illinois School Code when administering medicine for the safety of your child and others.

While the Summer Zone staff supervisors are trained in basic first aid/CPR procedures, 911 will be called for emergency situations. There will not be a school nurse on site for the Summer Zone program.

A Request for Medication to Be Administered at School – All Meds form must be completed and submitted with your Summer Zone registration packet for all medications administered at school, including over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol or cough drops and/or critical care items such as inhalers or Epi-Pens.

The medicine must be brought to Summer Zone on your child’s first day of enrollment in the original bottle/container with a pharmacy label (for prescription medications). Students may not transport their own medication.

Parents are responsible for administering morning medications. Once-daily meds are not given at Summer Zone.

Medications must be picked up by the parent at the close of the Summer Zone program on July 21, 2017, or the medication will be disposed of according to school procedures.

New medication forms must be filled out each year.

Students are not allowed to carry any medication on them at any time. Medications will be stored in a locked cabinet in the Clinic office. Summer Zone staff will have access to the medications for all on and off site activities.

Students who are District 7 residents, but do not attend District 7 schools, must complete a Health Information Form and submit with your Summer Zone registration packet.

Behavioral Expectations

Summer Zone students are expected to follow the elementary school building rules for conduct and behavior. Program staff will work with students to make positive choices, to promote respect for others, and to encourage self-discipline by setting expectations and activity guidelines, focusing on choices, and promoting a child’s self-esteem. Our goal is to help students resolve conflicts and use self-regulation strategies so that students can have a positive experience at Summer Zone.

Students are expected to:

1. Listen and comply with staff directions
2. Follow all building and playground rules
3. Demonstrate respect for themselves and others
4. Keep hands, feet, and unkind comments to themselves

Staff will work with the child and family to resolve problems. Strategies include the use of verbal reminders, 1:1 conference with the student, and if necessary, a regroup time where the student will be asked to sit out of the activity. All efforts will be made to give the student the opportunity to rejoin the activity.

Site staff will communicate with parents verbally and with a Behavior Note when issues arise during the Summer Zone session. Conferences with a Program Coordinator, the Assistant Director, and/or the Director may result in suspension of service in times of increased or severe issues. Parents may also be requested to pick up a child for the day who is disruptive to the flow of the program, or if the behavior results in an unsafe environment.

No credits will be issued for absences due to behavior suspension or dismissal.

If efforts to resolve the situation, or behaviors, are not productive, dismissal from the program may be a consequence.
