Board of Education Monthly Meeting Summary: April 28

Board Summary logo

The Edwardsville Community Unit School District #7 Board of Education met on Monday, April 28, 2025, in the Liberty Middle School Auditorium for its monthly board meeting.

These are not the official meeting minutes and do not include every detail from the meeting but rather a summary to assist the District #7 community. The official minutes can be found on the District #7 Board of Education Board Docs once approved by the Board.

Board Reorganization
Newly elected Board members Sara Bauer, Matt Breihan, and Alma Carver, along with re-elected member Scott Ahart, were officially sworn in. Bob Paty was elected as Board President, while Alma Carver was elected as Vice President, and Matt Breihan as Secretary.

From the Superintendent’s Report:

  • The electric sign in front of EHS has not been working correctly. The sign is old and has reached its limit in terms of repairs. The district is working on a bid to replace the sign. As with other maintenance items, there is a line item in the budget designated for these types of purchases.

  • Upon returning from Spring Break, the restrooms outside the EHS Commons are closed for renovations. Secure trailers with fully functioning restrooms are accessible during the school day on the north side of the A170 hallway.

  • The summer construction schedule for buildings was shared with District #7 staff and will be available on the district website later this week. Information will include all projects taking place at each building, the timeline for those projects, and the funding sources. Construction is scheduled at all buildings except Midway, Goshen, Cassens, Worden, and Liberty. Projects include secure double entrances, roof replacements, and parking lot resealing, to name a few.

  • The EHS gym floor installation continues as scheduled. Liberty’s gym floor experienced a large amount of water on the floor earlier this month when a sprinkler head was hit and broken. The District is continuing to monitor that floor and is concerned about the amount of water the floor absorbed. However, as of now, the floor is still available for use and will continue to be monitored.

  • EHS had five students earn a perfect score of 36 on their ACT test. Additionally, four students earned a score of 35. Approximately 11 percent of the junior class scored a 30 or better.

  • District #7 will transition from Board Docs to Diligent Community for Board meeting agendas prior to the May 12 meeting. While access will still be through the D7 website, Diligent Community will have a different, more user-friendly appearance. This change is part of a larger shift following Diligent’s acquisition of Board Docs and the launch of the Diligent Community platform.

  • Final plans are being finalized for graduation to be held at the Vadalabene Center on the SIUE campus on Sunday, June 1, due to construction at EHS. Following this year's ceremony, we will assess space needs and begin discussions about future graduation locations.

  • Registration reminders: Registration for the 2025-26 school year opened on April 22. The entire process can be completed online. Those who require assistance can email registration@ecusd7.org or call 618-655-6058. Parents/guardians will need two proofs of residency from the last 30 days when registering their child(ren).

Student Presentation
EHS senior and student representative for the Board of Education, Amulya Girarda, who is also president of the Business Professionals of America (BPA) club at EHS, gave a presentation highlighting the club’s activities and her involvement. BPA is a national organization that meets weekly on Mondays, with each month centered around a main theme broken into weekly subtopics. EHS recently had 25 students compete at the state competition this February. Amulya competed in Interview Skills and Video Production, preparing a professional resume and portfolio, and earned second place last year. This year, she partnered with Cooper Wittek on a video project about the Chamber of Commerce, placing sixth. Through that project, they have been able to build meaningful connections with the Ed-Glen Chamber of Commerce, engaging with members during their Business After 4 events. This has provided students with opportunities to meet business leaders and CEOs.
