EHS Named a Unified Banner School

Edwardsville High School has once again earned national recognition for its commitment to inclusion, being named a Unified Champion Banner School by Special Olympics Illinois.

This honor is bestowed upon schools that demonstrate a dedication to creating an inclusive environment through athletics, leadership opportunities, and whole-school engagement.

Edwardsville is one of only 21 schools in Illinois to receive the designation this year and is among just five schools statewide to earn the distinction twice.

The achievement was celebrated in front of a packed gymnasium as the school unveiled its new banner during a special event. Before the unveiling, Unified athletes showcased their talents in a series of exhibition events, including flag football, dance, and basketball, demonstrating the power of inclusion in action.

To qualify as a Unified Champion Banner School, Edwardsville met 10 standards of excellence set by Special Olympics North America. These include the implementation of Unified Sports, where students with and without disabilities compete together, and inclusive youth leadership programs that empower students to advocate for a culture of acceptance. Additionally, the school has embraced whole-school engagement activities, ensuring that inclusion is embedded into the fabric of student life.
