Strengthening Student Learning Through PLCs

In 2022–23, District #7 began implementing Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) across the district. PLCs provide teachers with dedicated time to collaborate, review student learning, share instructional strategies, and plan support for students who need additional help or greater challenge.

This collaborative work helps ensure every student has access to a high-quality educational experience, regardless of classroom or school. It also allows teachers to identify and respond to student needs more quickly, rather than waiting until the end of a unit or grading period.

The first few years of PLC implementation helped District #7 build an important foundation for this work. While progress was slower than anticipated, the district has gained momentum since 2024–25 and continues to see meaningful growth in collaborative practices that support student learning.

Our PLC Goals
District #7's PLC goals are centered on creating greater consistency and supporting student learning. Through collaboration, teacher teams work together to establish clear learning expectations and provide meaningful, consistent experiences for students across classrooms.

PLC teams focus on:

• Creating greater consistency in grading and assessment practices so students and families have a clear understanding of expectations and how learning is measured.

• Monitoring student progress to identify when students need additional support or opportunities for greater challenge.

• Using evidence of student learning to adjust instruction and better meet the individual needs of students.

This work is intended to create consistency in expectations and opportunities—not identical classrooms or instruction. Teachers continue to have flexibility to meet the individual needs of their students while working toward shared learning goals.

PLCs in Action
The impact of collaborative teacher teams can be seen across District #7. The district has been home to Illinois Exemplary Schools, including Goshen Elementary, Glen Carbon Elementary, Cassens Elementary, and Edwardsville High School. Leclaire Elementary has also been recognized as a Model PLC School, demonstrating the impact of teachers working collaboratively to support student learning.

Edwardsville High School has also been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top high schools in the nation and the highest-ranked high school in the Metro East region.
