Decision-Making Process
District #7 covers 185 square miles, creating unique transportation and safety considerations. Decisions regarding severe weather are made with the safety and well-being of students and staff as the top priority.
Communication Procedures
During a shelter-in-place event, families will receive regular updates via email, text message, and phone call. If you did not receive communications during a recent event, please contact your student’s school to verify your contact information.
Tornado Watches vs. Warnings
According to the National Weather Service:
- Tornado Watch: Conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop.
- Tornado Warning: A tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar. Immediate shelter is required.
During a tornado warning, all students and staff move to designated tornado-safe areas.
Shelter-in-Place Procedures
A shelter-in-place may occur during severe weather or environmental emergencies. During these events, school staff supervise students and work closely with emergency agencies to ensure safety. Students will remain sheltered until district officials determine the threat has passed.
Parent/Guardian Guidance
During a shelter-in-place, parents and guardians should not come to the school to pick up students unless directed otherwise by the district. Staff will be sheltered with students, phones may not be answered, and building access will be restricted for safety reasons.
Students will not be dismissed or checked out during a shelter-in-place. If dismissal is impacted, it will be delayed until the Superintendent gives the all-clear. Buses will not transport students until warnings are lifted.
If severe weather occurs during drop-off or dismissal, families will be notified if a brief entry window is available before the building fully shelters in place.
Student and staff safety remain District #7’s highest priority. We appreciate the cooperation and support of our families during emergency situations.
